“By the Waters of Babylon”

American Poet and Author Stephen Benet

This is Stephen Benet, the author.

The person in Stephen Benet’s short story “By the Waters of Babylon” is very cautious and calm. He does have a really brave attitude and does not show emotion easily. I think it is important that a protagonist of a story has these characteristics, because the reader wants to see a smart man and him using his brain to solve situations. Also, the reader wants him to have brave qualities.

At the end of the story John says “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” I think this means that we are not stopping to enjoy and savor the knowledge we partake of. We are learning the minimum of the subject and then we move on. We need to take in what we are learning and fully absorb the knowledge before moving on to the next section.

Stephen Benet’s short story “By the Waters of Babylon” was written in 1937. At that time, nobody had nuclear weapons. Benet talks about complete destruction of a civilization and I think that these do not have relevance because he couldn’t possibly know what s going to happen in the future.

This is what I imagined what the mother would look like.

Does the mother seems outwardly demure (modest, shy) and reserved (quiet)? Although the mother seems quiet and doesn’t like to talk, she is definitely not shy or modest on stage. The fact that there is barely any quotes of the mother speaking, says that she does not like to speak. This quote from the story “In the final vignette of their act, they actually would kiss in midair”, proves that she is not shy when performing.

Does she have a hidden, wild energy? The mother seems very calm to me in this story, under one condition. She is performing dangerous acts in midair while kissing guys.  This quote, “He held his hands out to receive his pregnant wife”, shows that the mother has a wild side to her. That’s so because she was doing these dangerous stunts while she was pregnant.

Is she able to transform, or change, herself and others?  The mother changed many people in this story. Most importantly she changed her daughter. When the family’s house caught on fire, the Daughter thought that no would rescue her and given up hope, but then the mother came in from a two-story high window with just a night-gown on and saved her daughter.

The Beatles-Something

In the song “something” by the Beatles, John Lennon’s main struggle with love is how he has to leave his lover and keep his bond strong even when she’s not there physically. Here is a quote from the song, “I don’t want to leave her now. You know I believe and how.” This quote shows that he truly loves whoever she is. In conclusion, the main struggle with love is how he has to keep a bond with his lover even if she is not there.

John Lennon in his song “Something” sings about many components of love.  He talks about how she attractive him like no other lover. Here is another quote from the song, “Attracts me like no other lover.” Overall, that’s the main thing he sang about in the song.

Well John Lennon connects to this song very well. Since he was on tour most of the time, he didn’t have very much time to spend with his loved ones. Here is a quote from the song that shows that he is trying to make her come on tour with him, “Your asking me will my love grow…You stick around now it may show, I don’t know, I don’t know.” John Lennon connected to this because the time where he made this song, he was thinking of breaking up the band and starting a family.

“If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then Jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example.”

It’s important to remember atrocities like the Holocaust for several reasons. To honor the victims and keep their memory alive through stories of their lives. Also, to Keep such a thing from happening again.

Jewish Resistance

The Jewish resistance movement was significant because it showed that the Jews did not give up and kept on fighting even what they have been through. To prevent future genocides, world leaders need to have the political will to stop them and the world needs to develop international institutions that predict and prevent it.

Atomic Bomb

Photo From: http://www.themattrix.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/atomicbomb.jpg

The use of the atomic bomb on Japan was not necessary. First, the majoritiy of the victims were civilians. About 45,000 people on the first day of the bombing and 19,000 thousand after that do to radiation and cancer. In addition, the United States could have dropped the atomic bomb on a remote island and shown what damage it can cause and see if they would surrender or not.

The Causes of WWII and the Most Influential Axis Leader

The Cause of WWII

Photo From: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-R01213,_Versailles,_deutsche_Verhandlungdelegation.jpg

The causes to WWII are the Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, Adolf Hitler and National Socialism. First we have the treaty of Versailles that primarily made Federal Republic of Germany purchase all the harm WW1 had done. Then there was the League of Nations that failed to act against Adolf Hitler and Germany. In addition, I believe Adolf Hitler was the main cause of WWII. With the crash of the German stock market and there economic crisis, made Hitler’s political career a footnote in history.

The most influential Axis leader was Benito Mussolini. He was the most influential leader because he made the war against Hitler more difficult. Then, Mussolini did create an innovative, Fascist-minded air force for Italy. Finally, Mussolini implored Hitler to make peace with Joseph Stalin and concentrate on defeating the British-American forces. Benito Mussolini can be remembered for trying to make Italy a Fascist empire, and being Hitler’s ally during WWII.

The battle of Pearl Harbor took place in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The battle was fought between Japan and the United States. The battle was a surprise attack conducted by the Japanese Navy. The Harbor was attacked by 353 Japanese planes and that resulted into 2,008 sailors were killed and 710 others were wounded. The Attack on Pearl Harbor was significant to WWII because it led the entry of the United States into WWII.

The most influential Ally leader was Winston Churchill, Great Britain’s Prime Minister. He was the most influential Ally leader because he was the British most powerful weapon against Hitler and Germany. In an amusing speech, he said, “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets… we shall never surrender.” This was the attitude that he fired back at Hitler, and that motivated him to try to invade Great Britain. Although British airfields, aircraft factories, and London were badly bombed, Churchill did not let Great Britain give up. Eventually Hitler decided to call of the attacks, stunned by British resistance. Winston Churchill may have taught the Allies and the whole world the most important lesson of WWII; Hitler’s attacks can be stopped.

Frontinus, Roman General and governor of Britain, neutrally believes that technology was not important to Rome at that time because he thinks that they had all the tools that they needed to succeed at anything.

Felix Baumgartner’s full- pressure suit is his only protection until he meets the safety of a lower level of atmosphere. This is the first time that a full-pressure suit has been used for a free fall attempt. The exterior of the suit is made of a material that is both fire retardant and is against extreme cold. The suit is designed to provide protection from temperatures of +100°F to -90°F. The helmet on the suit weighs about 8 pounds and is resistant to impact. The helmet will provide Felix with 100 percent oxygen to breathe.

The balloon is filled with helium to make it float. The balloon is made with a material called polyethylene (plastic) film. Polyester-fiber can hold up to weights that are unbearable. Although the balloon can hold so much weight, it can easily rip by the wind. An interesting fact about the balloon is that it takes 8 hours of preparation immediately before launch, including about 45 to 60 minutes for insertion of the helium.

Another one is a package that will be used by the world governing body for air sports and aeronautical world records to verify the records Felix hopes to establish.
